Product Review: Huel powdered food

Busy? Not eating properly? Then look no further as we road test ‘Huel’ – the complete meal replacement shake.

What is it? Well ‘Huel’ is a nutritionally complete powdered food that contains all the proteins, carbs, and fats you need, plus at least 100% of the European Union’s “Daily Recommended Amounts” of all 26 essential vitamins and minerals.

It’s been formulated by the renowned nutrition expert James Collier who has over 25 years of experience working in nutrition and dietetics, including 7 years as a Clinical Dietitian in the NHS. He also has an Honours Degree in Nutrition with Dietetics.

‘Huel’ is 100% vegan, super convenient, high in protein (148g per 2000 calories) and fibre (35g), contains just 4.6 grams of sugar per 2000 calories (no added sugar) and has a shelf life of 12 months.

Wow – where’s the catch? Well it tastes disgusting. I can honestly say I have never tried something so bad and was convinced my batch must have been damaged or ‘gone off’ -like a corked wine. There’s no way people drink this stuff voluntarily right? Well apparently they do and ‘Huel’ claim to have sold 17 million meals (yep – you read that right).

I had the vanilla flavour, but all I could taste was the sweetener that is put in to mask the fact that this product is about as natural as the plastic cup you drink it from. And unless you put in a nutri-bullet it has the same texture as sawdust when mixed with water.

I am all for eating healthier and promoting an active lifestyle but what ever your diet goals are, ‘Huel’ should not be part of it.
