It was a title held for years, passed from each year to the next with great honour. That was until last night – the undefeated reign of III Para’s boxing team.

The annual Army Boxing Final held in colchester was between 13 Air Assault RLC and 3rd Battalion The Parachute Regiment.

Streamed live on facebook, although with reported difficulties and held at the Budd VC Gymnasium.

All seven bouts went the distance but there was no way back once 13AASR took a 4-2 lead.

The contest eventually finished 4-3.

Light heavyweight Private Ryan Abel secured the victory in the night’s penultimate contest.

Cpl Jesse Pickerill was the winning coach.

He said: “I’m hugely proud of how the lads boxed to earn the victory against very strong opponents in 3 PARA.

“We knew we had a strong team of boxers from back in October when we had the inter-squadron competition to start the process of picking our team.

“It’s been a long season since, everyone has worked hard in training and in our fights and we have performed to our potential to win.”
